Special Guests - Friday, May 30th
Michigan Xtreme Judo/MMA is off to a great start as we have developed a solid core of individuals dedicated to learning the Judo/MMA game. I am very pleased to announce that next week Friday, May 30, 2008, we will have two guest instructors from the Kalamazoo area. They are Ron Blake and Dusty Moran. I have known both of these guys for years so I know you are in for a real treat. Ron has won more Michigan Judo Championships than I can count. He is particularly adept at newasa (ground work). I am certain Ron will teach turns and submissions you have never seen before. Dusty also has won a slew of Michigan Judo Championships. His focus will be more of the standup game. Both of these instructors have competed in judo both nationally and internationally. I think we are all in for a great practice.
Finally, remember there will be no Judo/MMA this Friday due to the Memorial Weekend Holiday, but mark your calendar for Friday the 30th for some XTREME training!!!
Cost is $5 per session paid at the door. Michigan Xtreme Judo/MMA is open to everyone ages 16 and over. Application/waivers are required and can be completed on-site.

Michigan Xtreme Announces Expansion Plans - Increases Public Awareness
With the growth of wrestling at the youth and high school levels throughout the state, Michigan Xtreme is excited to announce the expansion of its training center from the current 2,700 sq. ft. facility to its new location which increases the space significantly to 8,300 sq. feet. Grand Opening of the new wrestling training center is projected for Monday, June 30th.
The new facility was made possible primarily with the support and collaborative efforts from our wrestling community, area coaches, the commitment of the wrestlers and their parents and the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association (MYWA) and local area clubs and teams.
"We have seen a gradual increase in the commitment levels from the local area programs to seek out not only additional training opportunities for their elite level wrestlers who dream of becoming State Champions, but also a trend by the youth clubs and entire team based programs that want to offer more to all their wrestlers from the youth level, through middle school and high school." "One key success factor has been our consistency. Individual wrestlers, parents, coaches and now entire teams can count on us as an added resource that will always be open, that never cancels or closes practices and provides a coaching staff that gives 100% quality, effort and proven teaching curriculums."
The new facility will provide many other features and benefits. First, the training center selected is centrally located to support most everyone throughout West Michigan. In fact, 90% of the 32 school districts represented as current attending members will find the location an average of 8-10 minutes closer. By remaining near to several major highways (I-96 and US-131), this new location also helps maintain a moderate commute with easy access for even our closest of members. The NEW Michigan Xtreme Training Center will be located at 3494 Plainfield Avenue NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525.
Outside the obvious benefit of providing significantly more floor space of wrestling to support the growth of High School members for safety and improved training situations, the added space increases the opportunity for other value-added features such as an adequate waiting area for parents, ample parking, larger locker/changing rooms, a men's & women bathrooms, strength and cardio-equipment and additional cross-training and practice session workout schedules.
Most importantly, with the help of organizations such as MYWA (Michigan Youths Wrestling Association) and Michigan Grappler, bringing more public exposure is going to help our sport continue to grow and gain the respect and recognition it deserves. "We want to model ourselves from the success by which MYWA has achieved in bringing everyone in the sport together for one common goal." Having a retail location and brining our sport to the publics eye makes this new training center something for all of us to help build. It's going to take a team effort, working together with the school based programs, coaches and clubs to bring our sport to another level. It's going to be how we continue to increase affordable training opportunities.
"We want this to be a place that is available to everyone from all walks of life and a home for those who want access to the facility regardless of where they live or what club or school they attend. In addition, we have a vision for this facility to be unique in its' diverse offerings by supporting the intensive training and advanced technique required by current college and potential Olympic hopefuls from the area as well. By maintaining the current Bronze, Silver and Gold programs we can continue to cater to all levels without losing the intensive-extended training needs to support your efforts in reaching your goals and dreams of being the best. There is a tremendous value for our younger up and coming wrestlers to see first hand the training disciplines and commitments of their mentors in action! There is much to learn from a diverse based of coaches and wrestling partners."
"We are asking for the continued support from the entire wrestling community throughout the State of Michigan. It will take a team effort to sustain this initiative and to ensure the offerings are affordable to all who have the desire to improve. It's one of our goals to be considered an additional resource to individuals, clubs and school based teams. We are thankful for the commitment of our coaching staff, the work ethics of the students and the loyalty of parents and fellow coaches throughout the community. We are most appreciative of the endorsements we've received from MYWA, BorderWars and MUSAW. We are accepting support from all that are interested in contributing. We are in need of community support for several items and services such as construction, electrical contractors, maintenance, signage, printing services, paint, furniture, mats, strength and cardio-training equipment, etc. to make this a first-class training facility. With help from MUSAW, we have already purchased (2) brand new 42'x40' Dollamur competition mats, 84' of wall mats and a landing/throw mat."
"In addition, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank several others for their support services already extended, specifically John Clark, Real Estate Consultant H&H Management; Mary Hurley, SimpleBookkeeping; Theresa Mabie, CPA; Nick Kacher, Attorney; Randy Tennihill Construction, Martin Juarez Concrete, Bill Roersma, Roersma & Wurn Builders, Mark Augustyn, V.P. Mercantile Bank; Josh Bennett, JB Construction; Todd Bitner, MUSAW; Gary Riveria, MYWA; Rob Stehley, BorderWars; The Camp Team, Insurance Agents; Gary Campbell, Jeff Gilmore, Steve Keselring and the Greenville WC; Jim Rees, Scott Trimble and the Sparta WC; and Nick Vodry, Jake Lewis and the Cedar Springs WC; and Coaching Volunteers: Jim Shutich Sr, Doug Bennett, Gideon Carlstrom, Brad King, Brian Maksimowski, Dave Dean, Jeff Shildroth and Jim Murray; as well as Tim Cooper-NEWA Representative; and Jim Rees-MYWA Representative."
Michigan Xtreme, LLC was originally founded in October 2001 formerly known as Camp Bennett Enterprises, LLC. In 2007, Camp Bennett Enterprises, LLC joined forces with Camp Shutich Enterprises, LLC dba as Michigan Xtreme, LLC. Effective June 1, 2008 the two organizations officially become Michigan Xtreme, L.L.C. and currently offers ten (10) weekly practice sessions for beginners with its' Bronze Program, intermediate level training with its' Silver Program and advanced level training with its' Gold Program in addition to Friday Night Judo/MMA, individual lessons, team-based programs, travel team sponsorships, student coaching internships and several summer wrestling intenstive and technique camps. For more information, please visit other sections of the Michigan Xtreme web site at: www.michiganxtreme.com.
Note: At this time, it is our plan to move the Silver and Gold groups to the new location due to the need for additional space and to keep the Bronze and Judo/MMA groups at the current location. Also, Saturday 9am-10:30am Silver practice sessions will remain at the current location as well.

2x State Champion - Jacob Burge - "Iron Sharpens Iron"!
When practice ended for most of Mason's wrestling team, it was merely a brief respite for Jacob Burge.
The Mason senior would drive to Rockford to workout again against one of the few people who've figured out how to beat him.
"Some kids don't understand the time he puts in, Bulldogs coach Brian Martel said. He goes through our practice and, seven days a week, picks up and drives out to Rockford and goes through another hour or two there. On weekends, he'd go to MSU, work out with some of the guys or practice some nights during the week at MSU. He's just got a lot of drive.
Burge shrugs it off: It's kind of hard to find competition and workout partners to make yourself better. You have to go those extra miles and extra minutes to get what you want to achieve, he says.
That added effort helped Burge land a scholarship to wrestle at North Carolina State this fall, consecutive individual state championships and his second straight State Journal Wrestler of the Year award.
Wrapping up his high school career with a 211-10 career record, Burge captured the 171-pound Division 2 championship in March at The Palace of Auburn Hills. That came a year after he won the title at 160 pounds. Only Rockford senior Ben Bennett was ranked higher at 171 in all classes across the state than Burge, according to michigangrappler.com.
They are good friends whose careers both benefited from the added difficulty of facing each other without a crowd (Bennett has signed with Central Michigan).

Ben Bennett - 2008 Prep Wrestler of The Year!
4/8 - The votes have been tallied and the result is clear: Ben Bennett is the 2008
prep wrestler of the year. The Rockford senior dominated the voting much like he
dominated his way through the Division 1 state tournament and the NHSCA Sr
National Tournament.
Bennett's storied career at Rockford came to an end last month as he wrapped up an
undefeated season with his 3rd Division 1 state title. Then, last weekend Bennett won
the prestigious Senior National Championships at 171lbs as was named the
tournament's Outstanding Wrestler after knocking off top ranked Hunter Collins of
California in the finals 7-2.
Bennett finished his career with only three total losses and two in the state of
Michigan. He lost once each year as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. His only loss during his sophomore campaign came in the state semifinals and kept him from becoming a 4x state champ and his only loss as a junior came from top ranked Sean Nemec of St. Edwards, Ohio.
Bennett will being stay close to home as his wrestling career will continue next fall in Mt Pleasant for coach Tom Borelli at Central Michigan University.
